Working in corrections affords folks some very interesting scenarios in their lives for example this interaction between myself and a recently convicted murderer of some notoriety in St. Louis (He was convicted of 25 charges in addition to first degree murder). So I'm going around the different areas of the housing unit I work in doing my evening count and as I walk past his cell he says to me:
Convict-"Man...you better quit creeping"
James- "Or what? It's my job to creep."
Convict- "That is some shit you'd say once I'm locked down."
James- "I'd have told you the same damn thing if you were out."
Convict-"Man wait 'til I'm out tomorrow"
James-"You're gonna have to wait cause you don't get out tomorrow."
Other Inmate-"We get out for rec on Monday"
Convict-"I'll get you Monday"
James-"Wouldn't you know it Monday is one of my off days, you're gonna have to wait until Wednesday, I hope you're still mad at me by then."
There is a certain joy in talking shit to punk asses who aren't shit without a gun in their hand (which is damn near all of them). I am not a prick to these guys without reason mind you, even when they are absolute life long bastards, I approach them with respect until they try to come at me like an asshole, then they get mean James, it's strange I've always had a slight latent mean streak but never really an avenue to utilize it. Some of these guys are so simple that with a modicum of effort I'm fairly sure I could just rip them down to their psychological foundations, but as such I've not been pushed to that point. Sorry to blab about my silly ass weirdo crazy man job. A co worker of mine said the other day: "Shit man, these guys don't scare me, they aren't crazy, we're the ones who are crazy we come in to this damn place 5 days a week voluntarily." I liked that quite a bit.
