Looking at iTunes and my top 25 most played songs reminds me of what a sad bastard I am...not always mind you, but sad bastard music is absolutely right up my alley. Check it out.
1. There Is a Light That Never Goes Out-The Smiths...Starting off with The Smiths, bad sign for happiness.
2. 66-The Afghan Whigs..."You walked in just like smoke with a little c'mon c'mon c'mon in your walk"
3. Cath...-Death Cab for Cutie...Now we're in to Ben Gibbard moping me out too.
4. Suedehead-Morrissey...Two songs written by the saddest man in history in my top 4 doesn't bode well.
5. I've Just Seen a Face-The Beatles...Memories of a time when hope was springing forth like a geyser.
6. Senses Working Overtime-XTC...Well I guess I can't be a fucking mope princess all the time.
7. On Fire-Sebadoh...On second thought maybe I CAN be a mope princess all the time, with Lou's help!
8. Sometime Around Midnight-The Airborne Toxic Event...The musical equivalent of a gut punch.
9. Let it Ride-BTO...Who doesn't love catchy 70's rock from a Canadian Mormon?
10. Time For a Game of Stick-Dianogah...You probably don't know this band, but you should, they rule.
11. Bad Houses-Dianogah...A Big Black cover, hooray for Chicago indie Post-Rock getting 2 in a row!
12. A Town Called Malice-The Jam...Just an awesome catchy kick ass song by a band from jolly ole England.
13. Take Advantage-Lou Barlow...Surprised it took Lou this long to show back up, he's my mope buddy.
14. Together or Alone-Sebadoh...Now Lou Barlow is doing it, seriously: THE voice of the heart broken boy.
15. Spirit of the Radio-Rush...This surprises me, makes me think of Meatwad...:"OF SALESMEN!"
16. Willing to Wait-Sebadoh...If a girl has ever hurt you Lou B knows how it feels and says it better than you.
17. Ghost Town-The Specials...Another surprise, I digs on Two Tone music, yet I hate reggae...irony?
18. You're Breaking My Heart-Harry Nilsson...Blunt but awesome another legend who not enough folks know.
19. Good Days Bad Days-Kaiser Chiefs...I like these guys, but I'm a softie for catchy British pop.
20. Naive-The Kooks...Showing my poor wittle broken heart again with this cut, nice song though.
21. Naomi-Neutral Milk Hotel...LOVE THIS SONG!
22. Dear God-XTC...Speaks to my atheism and I totally geeked out on XTC for a minute there...it's true.
23. A Lack of Color-Death Cab for Cutie...Ben Gibbard makes his second appearance, he's got Zooey at least.
24. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road-Elton John...classic sad bastard music, no doubt about it.
25. Why Bother?-Weezer...Weezer back before I wished Rivers Cuomo had been hit by a bus...apropos.
There was a tie for number 25 other candidates included:
The Way I Feel Inside-The Zombies...super short and beautiful, thanks Wes Anderson and Steve Zissou
The Weight-The Band...Another classic moper...outstanding all around.
No One's Gonna Love You-Band of Horses...Eeek this is a solid track for sure too.
Crooked Teeth-Death Cab For Cutie..."You can't find nothin' at all if there was nothin' there all along."
Save It For Later-The English Beat...I told you I like Two Tone, these guys were badass live too.
Heart of Gold-Neil Young...Such a cry baby I am. Fourth showing from Canada, I guess they aren't all bad.
So nothing I'm ashamed of, it's sad mostly, but it's all good...damn good. A little surprised my former mope life mate Elliott Smith didn't make an appearance, no Blur either, doesn't seem like me, but I do know how to commiserate with music. Seems like something from Radiohead would have made the cut too, but what can you do, Apple tells me what I obsess over, I should probably believe them.
