Trust me I tried to avoid Harry Potter for years (I worked at a bookstore so of course I hated them) but the movies got me thinking they weren't terrible, so I tried the books. About halfway into book 3 I was hooked for good. They are really, really good, despite all the hype.

that's not a bad idea (making our own party, not avoiding the Potter books )
