My mailbox is located on a main road, not in front of my house. I have a very bad habit of collecting my mail on my way home from work, just before I make the final turn down my road, after an hour or more of driving. The last thing on my mind at the time is opening bills, bank statements, or sorting through various catalogs and junk mail coupon penny-saver papers. Instead, I am thinking about what exactly I will do when I get home, and as a result I have this terrible habit of taking all of that mail I just pulled out of my mailbox, and stashing it in various places in my truck. Occasionally, I will remove the mail from my vehicle and pile it in various places inside my house. Then somewhere down the line, I will go through all of those piles, sort them into other piles, and so on...
For some reason, I decided to break from my habits today...
I was sitting in my truck shuffling through some paperwork (work-related stuff), when I found one of my many stashes of mail, no doubt weeks old. Among other items in this stash were three separate envelopes from my the bank that I have my mortgage through. The first envelope like a solicitation of some sort (left unopened), the next looked like the monthly statement, and the third looked different, but official, nonetheless. I decided to open the third envelope out of curiosity, and found that it was a statement showing the excess in my escrow account, and my new mortgage payment amount for April 2009 and beyond. Attached to the bottom was a check for a substantial amount of cash (the excess in the escrow account), and upon further investigation, the statement appeared to indicate that my mortgage payment has been reduced by close to 15%. I had to read the statement 3 or 4 times before I really understood, or believed, what was going on.
Today was a good day.
