Feelin' Kind of Blue
I'll tell you this now, that famous Coke sign in the city really is larger than life. You don't really notice it until you're in a car, lost in a jungle of one way roads and it passes above you like the king Kong of spam. It really didn't help much in trying to find our destination - the Blue Hotel on the Finger Wharf, in lovely Woolloomooloo. Against Kristy's advice I decided to go cowboy style and 'wing it'. With hardly any directions or sense of time we hurtled our way into the east side coast in hopes of a relaxing getaway. Well, what can I say, I really dig the recent trend of taking something old and making it new again. The 'hotel' used to be a shearing shed, then a loading naval dock during WWII. The insides of the wharf were converted into a lounge/bar/breakfast area and the rooms were stacked against the adjoining walls, overlooking the harbor. On one side was a view of the Domain, botanical gardens and Centerpoint sticking its all too familiar head out. On the other, where our room was, were two gigantic naval ships.
We spent a fair while trying to get a parking spot before realizing that all we had to do was pull up out front and get our valet to whisk it off for the evening! Ahh, the ignorance of Bogan heritage, I never knew such service existed to us Shire folk. 'No one's ever called me Sir, without adding - "your making a scene"' Our room was beautiful, my company was even more so. It was a loft room, with a generous space offering a comfy lounge, big cable TV, mini bar, writing desk and downstairs bathroom! The mini bar was, my god, the greatest offering known to man. All the spirits you could think off, fancy old-style pop-top Coke bottles (see, the advertising had no effect on me whatsoever), which I couldn't open as there were absolutely no bottle openers or utensils around of any kind, not that it was really a downside. Chocolates, Aspirin, Cameras, condoms, (including self heating lubricant! (yes I took it) ) and an oxygen can. Yes that's right, 'feeling down? Had a rough day, Inhale some blueberry and sandalwood scented oxygen direct from your mouth straight to your head' I kid you not. And I thought only necessity was the mother of invention, not boredom.
It was a 10 minute walk through the Domain, where they were setting up for Carols, and into Martin Place. We took in the giant Xmas tree, strolled through Pitt St Mall, losing ourselves in HMV and realizing sadly enough that every single product on offer is available to download illegally but for free, if you know where to look. It really is amazing how much money I've saved this year by downloading. I gawked at fancy looking smart menswear that I'll never be able to afford, and Kristy rummaged through the ubiquitous $10 Sunnies rack. We both got a pair; I ended up with some more Aviators. Every pair I've had either break or get lost within a month. I vowed to treat this pair as more special. We headed back to our place, got ready and headed off to the George St cinemas to see Casino Royale!
I loved it and can easily say Daniel Craig is the best Bond to date, not better than Connery, but definitely on a level comparable to. Im glad they got rid of the tackiness and added some grit, and contemporary style. I cried when they rolled and destroyed an Aston Martin Vanquish, and admired, unashamedly, at the drop dead amazingly gorgeous Eva Green, whom I would vote for as the Best Bond Girl Ever. I especially loved the quick witted banter
James - Your not my type anyway
Vesper - Smart?
James - Single.
I'm pretty sure even Kristy enjoyed it, and she hasn't had the best references to go by, with the only 007 flick she's seen being Die Another Day. We retired to our comfortable king bed and dozed off into dream land and only awoke from the lapping of the waves outside our window the next morning, in fact I felt like Bond that weekend. Though I doubt he would be caught driving a Toyota Yaris. We headed down for a late complimentary breakfast, Kristy had ricotta and banana pancakes with blueberry and maple syrup, and I had Bircher muesli with fruit. Filling. Very Filling. Had a cruisy trip home, stopped off to do some Xmas shopping and then retired home to play some Wii!
