While waiting to hear back from two potential job offers, thought id waste some time doing what i do best...watching movies!
Hired out (with much disgust to the over judgemental bitch serving me at the video store) Irreversible.
For those not familiar, it is a fractured narrative trailing in reverse the story of Alex, her new boyfriend Marcus, and her ex Pierre, how their paths in future are already written.
The opening scene takes the POV of a fly on the wall, with dizzying camera work, and a naueseating soundtrack, a 28khz sound was used, deliberately intending to create neasua, vertigo and motion sickness. I guessed this was to give us the point of view of the character after revenge and high on some unknown substance.
The pace slows and the story intensifies, with a sexually graphic scene that doesnt allow you room to breathe. Its not until 3/4ths throught the film that a moral reveals itself.
The filmmaker attempts to state that despite there being hope and light at the end of the tunnell, it may be possible our futures are already laid out and we are hopeless creatures in the hands of fate.
Highly reccommended for fans of progressive and experimental film-making. Although i do warn you, you must have a very high mental tolerance to endure this.
