No one except the kids who went to Fremont Elementary with me know who I'm talking about. I just found out from Misa's page that Jodi was in a car accident a week ago and died. Same age -- 26 -- she left behind a 7 year-old and 2-year old. Her husband has to come back from Iraq to care for the kids now.
Our lives were so different, even though we started out in the same place. I remember her being pretty much the only white girl in our class, her crazy blonde curly hair and her beat-up demin jacket that she had scrawled the names of all her favorite bands on in black Sharpie ... stuff I wouldn't hear until high school like Depeche Mode and The Cure, while all the popular 6th graders were listening to MC Hammer and NKOTB. She didn't give a shit about what everyone else thought. I think I understand where she was coming from a little better now.
The thing I remember most is that my dog Lisa was scared of her because she'd back her into a corner trying to give love. I always thought she could be scary aggressive sometimes. In the most recent picture I just saw of her, she was wearing a Harley Davidson tank top, so I guess sometimes personalities are a little lost in translation until you're older.
Regardless, she lived down the street from me, a couple houses down from my best friend Misa's house, so we hung out as much as little kids "hang out" in elementary school. Jodi has always been tangled up in my few-recalled childhood memories, and will probably always remain so.
Jodi, I don't know why I care that you're gone. But I do. I'm very sad for you and your family. I don't believe in god, but I hope whatever's out there for you is worth it.
