Even though I know there's really no such thing as "normal"-kid things to experience growing up, there are a bunch I missed out on. Whether by choice or my life's own going with the flow.
For one, I never learned how to ride a bike, which many of you know because you've teased me about it (I'm looking at you, Manchester_Black.)
I don't really think sitting on and pedaling a bicycle with training wheels constitutes actually bike riding... which is all I've ever done. My father took off said training wheels one year, and never put the big-kid ones on. I didn't grow up around anyone willing to teach me, so that was the extent of it. It might also have lent a hand in why I'm so god-awfully lazy in my twenties.
We never went on a family vacation, ever.
I didn't actually go on my first date until college; prior to that, all it ever was went like this:
Me (or Boy): "So you want to be my boy(girl)friend?"
Boy (or Me): "Okay."
Not once have I participated in any school's science fair. I suppose if I had, I would have made one bad-ass model solar system or styrofoam volcano that would have been appropriate two grades earlier.
While my friend brought her booze to junior high in plastic water bottles to drink from when she should have been in class, and another was stealing cigarettes from her mother's purse, I was in the background shaking my head, tsk-tsk fashion. Peer pressure was a concept I was aware of yet didn't realize. Because no baked-out acquaintance of mine ever "Yo, man, you need this stuff"'d me. Then again, I doubt I would have fallen for it since I knew fairly early on in life I was a born square, and didn't necessarily mind.
Prom? Fuck that.
Things go the way they do and it's worth looking back on them to see how they've shaped you. Squared is fine, for me.
