You Know films are a world within a world within another world. It's really a beautiful thing how lost we are, and we want to get even more lost sometimes - David Lynch
A dream that is not interpreted is like a letter that is not opened- Freud
I re-watched Mulholland Drive againive lost count how many times I have watched it..and after writing my post-grad paper on an immersion into the subconscious world of Mulholland DriveI still just cant get over how beautiful and amazing a piece of film it is.I love how it employs the logic of a dream, creates an extreme sense of unease and is a visual puzzle that is eager to fool the mind the way trompe leil paintings trick the eye,how hypnotic and poetic the visuals are and how they have an ability to go beyond logic to evoke moods that penetrate and haunt us in our waking and sleeping lives..his myriad of colourful and beautifully weird characters(I love it when Coco goes on about some prize-fighting Kangaroo that used to shit in the patio and seeing Billy Ray Cyrus with his arms folded cracks me up every fucking time!!!) and a score that just gets inside your skin, allows you to immerse yourself in this dream-place
I love Rita and the vacancy that comes with her extraordinary beauty and the onlookers willingness to project any combination of angelic and devilish onto her and if blonde Betty is the films governing consciousness, or unconsciousness as we come to understand, then passive and alluring Rita is its object of desire..I think its very interesting how she lifts her name from the Gilda poster because Rita Hayworths real name is actually Margarita Carman Cansino which is a Hispanic name, and Laura Elena Harring is also Hispanic and she recaptures that wounded, denude heritage of Rita Hayworth; as well as her vagueness- the stunned, incomplete aspectinteresting..
.In Freuds theory, dreams are distorted manifestations of unconscious desire that can only be understood dialectically in relationship to the waking life of the dreamer and he states that the dream does not simply give expression to a thought, but represents the wish fulfilled as a hallucinatory experience. What is of vital importance in unlocking the mysteries evident in Mulholland Drive, is that fact that it is impossible to discover the thoughts, ideas or wishes that are fulfilled in a disguised way without considering the mechanisms that constitute the dream-work and bring about the transposition or distortion of the dream-thoughts into the manifest content. With this is mind, the mechanisms that constitute Dianes dream come from Dianes real life, from which the Betty/Rita narrative draws most of its raw material. Dianes dream also incorporates much inspiration from Hollywood movies in terms of tone and plot structure, with many shades of classic film noirs (especially Bergmans Persona,- a favourite film of Lynchs), and idealised 50s classics and crime dramas from The Godfather to Pulp Fiction.
I find it very interesting that the whole notion of The Wizard of Oz relates to Mulholland Drive in that like Dorothy who fills Oz with people and objects drawn form her own daily experiences and wishful imaginings, the characters in Dianes dream fantasy are all taken form her reality..
.I think Lynch is masterful in his use of symbolisation especially in Mulholland DriveThe Cowboy to me may be seen to be a representation of a pre-lapsarian Hollywood when the studio system ruled and studio heads of virtually limitless power really did pull the strings. (Beachwood Canyon where he resides is high above Hollywood, suggesting his dominating power and influence)
the Monster behind Winkies is not an exclusively evil figure as it functions as a corrosive force of entropy attempting to dissolve Dianes fantasy in favour of self-realisation.and those trippy shrunken grandparents that emit from the box and scare the life out of Diane can be seen as symbolising her suppressed guilt at her evil deed once the protectors of her innocence they now run at her plaguing her with guilt, almost acting as the voice of her conscience, they appear tiny at first but become bigger and more terrifying, just like the guilt would grow of Dianes conscious, literally scaring her to death.
...Anyway jesus, I am entering my film-geek phase, so ill stop now, I could go on about this film forever, its so multi-layered and Lynch actually tells the story with the camera- as opposed to the popular substitute of telling the story in front of the camera, with his dreamlike images reeling you in as you succumb to the films surrealistic world where one can discover a lot about themselves..
...Other than watching trippy films, I have been on a bit of a creative binge as of late and its been greatI have been making a lot of animations of single-frame images, going on many wild tangents with Photoshop to create some cool images and trying my hand at painting and working on my writing, and working on my juggling styleim getting really quite good with the Cascade pattern, im trying to do a little routine to the YeahYeahYeahs song Tick, going along with the rhythem, its quite trippy especially when Karen O screams Tick, tick,tIck, TiCk... over and over!!!...
I also got out of doing some film work for this weird kinda woman, just had the mean bad buzz about it, plus she seemed to rope me in unknowingly with promise of seemingly non-existant money!...so its great to have all that of my conscienceI was having some far-out tripped dreams about it, so I paid attention to the symbols inherent in them.
its lovely and sunny here, spring is abundant, I went to the Rose Gardens the other daythe myriad of beautiful flowers is over-whelming and the smell in the air, all my sensory perceptions elevatedit was beautifulplayed on the swings seeing how high I could get watching the world go by, being inquisitive about naturethe geometry of four black birdsthe limitless possibilities of finding pictures in the clouds
life is great at the moment and its a bright sunny Saturday morning here and im about to go get a smoothie and go to a park with some partners in crime..
peace and karma everyone

i had a serious urge to burn the damn thing, it frustrated me so badly, i felt like lynch had finally blatantly mocked his fans by jerking off into the camera and calling it a film
but when i have more time ill discuss that theory with more clarity
take care
