Yesterday proved itself to be a rather eventful day here on SG for me. Names will be omitted to protect the innocent, but the developments were as follows:
1. I started a dialog with someone so absurdly intelligent that our conversation both inspired and intellectually emasculated me. To soften the blow to my ever delicate ego, she was kind enough to send along a track off of Savath and Savalas' Apropra't, specifically 'Te Quiero Pero Por Otro Lado.' Absolutely amazing. I'm going to run out and pick up the album today. Oh, and did I mention that this person is only 21 years old? When I was 21 I listening to the fucking Spin Doctors, and my greatest intellectual endeavor was figuring out how to make a better hash pipe out of a Macintosh apple.
2. 'Te Quiero Pero Por Otro Lado' is loosely translated as "I want you, but on the other hand...", which, ironically enough, brings me to the next friend I encountered during yesterday's strange SG journey. Our conversation revolved around the nature of relationships, and what gets in the way of happiness and/or contentment within them. Actually, that was more my issue, but her's was at least tangentally related. In any event, I spoke of what has essentially become my predominate philosophy on the universal truth of a relationship, namely luminescence vs. complacent contentment. I wrote: "When you first meet someone, or feel
something for someone--it's just luminescent. You can't stop thinking about them, wanting them, touching them, et cetera. Everything they do is cute, every
silly thing they say endearing, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Everyone's a soulmate in the luminescent phase. Then, but of course, the luminescence fades and it all
becomes dirty socks and underwear. There is no escape or magic bullet. Ultimately we succumb to gravity and settle in a safe, predictable, soft and boring place. So [it really becomes a] question [of] who do you want to spend your time with in that safe, predictable, soft and boring place?" I'm not really sure why I felt the need to repost those thoughts here, but I suppose I'd be interested to hear what your own thoughts are on this subject.
