It was a sea of obscure band tee's, references to Dethklok, body art work and loud loudness, if that is possible to say...that was my last night, never had I heard guitars and basses tuned so low and to the point of body recognition frequencies...Woah. Emperor and Orange amps were the rule and Fender made you seem weak. I had no clue who Torche and Clouds were, but I was very very impressed, Ms. Melsha enjoyed the thrashing, I saw her do her shy headbanging before the tiredness took over. The show felt like an endurance test, at points you wanted to just be able to make it to the end alive. Clouds hailing from Boston took the stage like a thunderbolt, it was a killer deal, Motoread meets Weezer and I even felt the presence of some early Beatles with some Slayer sprinkled for good measure. Up next, Torche, I guess they were the crowd favorite and apprently they had already had their chanceto melt some faces opening up for The Sword last month, the kids went nuts. Good clean vocals a la Sabbath with the riffery of early Metallica and Megadeth, the rumble factor made them heroes in my eyes and ears. I feel like they blew their load early on in their set, I understand the trip, trust me I do and I am all about it but you need to get me somewhere, you need to get me off as it was pointed out by Ms. Melsha "...that was a lot of work, for a mediocre orgasm..." oh well, at least we got some good low rumble, fast parts and great harmonic vocals, Clouds gets an A and Torche gets a B-.
Now off I go into Boris land... see, these guys were my main thing, this was the reason for the night, but very soon I would learn to just enjoy their presence because they weren't going to hit the mark...
Covered in sky scraping Sun O))) and Orange amps and chugging along with an almost glow-in-the-dark-Bonham-styled drum set finalized with a Zildjian Gong, Boris took the stage. They seemed enthusiastic about the show, well as enthused as Asian people get which isn't really that visible but regardless here they were and I was shaking like a little girl, I have their records and I've seen their videos...holy lord!!! let the post-apocalyptic-post-punk-post-rumble begin......ok......GO!.....no?....oh......maybe next song?.....no.....ummmm.....ok, where is Wata's leads?!!!!!! Where's the Groove?!!!!!! ...they never locked on anything or anywhere...
So here's the deal Boris brings a "special guitarist" to the show, I guess on the tour, and well, he never really shut up. It felt like when you bring someone to a party and all they do is talk over the conversation and tell your stories. HE WOULDN'T STOP RIFFING OVER THEM!!!!! I was so mad at this guy, strike that, still am. He really did ruin the Boris experience for me. Thankfully Ms. Melsha hasn't totally given up on them, she's still wanting to hear Akuma No Uta. The audience was very accepting, they were brutal to each other in the pit and I've no clue if it was the booze or the weed, but they really didn't have a problem with them not ever locking on a groove all night.
It was what it was, I saw Boris and made it out alive with my hearing, it's a badge of honor...SUCK IT!
