i think moving away from where one grew up is essential to one's writing. or maybe that's just me.

stockholm and helsinki are both fascinating cities, in their own ways. i didn't like helsinki much (but i was only there for about 8 hours and bitchy as hell that day anyway for several reasons.) you can take a lovely cruise ride from one to the other for about US$40. actually, when i went, it was early october, which is pretty close to when the waterways start to ice over, so it was only US$20.
