"I wish I knew more people who spoke like the character's in Jonathan Lethem's novels"
Denise, who is in her late twenties, loves the band she belongs to, where she performs playing the bass. She breaks up with her current lover, leaves her job as a waitress and starts working for another ex-lover, an artist who owns a gallery and has set up an installation: a call center to take "complaints" from the citizens of Los Angeles. Denise works as one of the phone operators, keeping record of the complaits received.
"They's discuss anything, but what they really felt, the silently expanding center of the universe"
Her nameless band: a beautiful zoo employee sings, a sex shop worker plays the drums and a depressed, lonely , shy film student writes the tunes and plays the guitar. They need new songs thought (writer's block is a bitch) and a big break. Enter Falmouth, the complainer...
Falmouth is older, chubby and everything he says makes you think deep thoughts, Denise falls for him, after that, I doubt that someone would stop reading.
I love all the characters in this, Lethem's latest novel, each is unforgettable, each one says unforgettable things like:
"...you can't be deep without a surface"
"All the best meals requiere an elephant's graveyard, said Falmouth. Piles of shells or pits or bones. Bay leaves are like a small piece of corruption in our food, like the element of a skull in certain early Renaissance marriage paintings."
"I had a professor who used to say that every movie had one actor you wished the whole was about. In a bad one you might only see them for a minute, they'd be playing a bellhop in a hotel or something. In a pretty good movie, they'd have a supporting part. In a great one you'd have the same feeling of whishing the movie was about them and they'd turn up in every scene. Right after that, whoever it was would be a star in their next movie, but they'll never be as good."
You will fall in love with many of the characters before you are thru with the tale of one of those bands whoe felt very close to "making it" during the early nineties "alternative rock" scene. I've left out many wonderful things for you to discover in this gorgeous piece of writing, by the author of "the fortress of solitude", another favorite of mine, READ IT!
