Miami this morning. I haven't made a Florida delivery in months, so I'm glad for the change of routine. Florida has a bit of a truck parking problem however, so making Miami deliveries requires a bit of forethought and strategy. The closest SAFE (stress the safe part) truck stop is about 120 miles north of Miami (in the Ft. Pierce / Port St. Lucie area). That means parking there overnight and getting up early and doing the last leg in the morning (assuming one has a morning delivery). But the problem is by mid-afternoon most or all of the parking spots are taken and some lots are beginning to overflow. The truck stops get on their PA systems and threaten to tow any truck that's illegally parked, yada yada. Same thing every time. So what the SMART driver (like myself) does is plan his two day trip so that the majority of it is done the first day. Then get an early start on day two and be AT these crowded truck stops by very early afternoon, thus guaranteeing a parking spot (as well as the rest of the day to relax).
If I'd only had my bike with me, I could have gotten some exercise in this extreme heat. Heh. With some luck, it will be delivered this coming week and be waiting for me the next time I go home. Hopefully. Keep your fingers crossed.
I'm almost done with season two of "Rome". It's a real shame that HBO wont be making any more. Too expensive, they say. Same reasoning applies to why they decided not to continue "Deadwood" beyond the third season. It's a true shame because both are an absolute delight to watch.
It's possible I'll stop in Atlanta and meet a few online friends on my way back north. Depends on scheduling of course. Hopefully wherever I go for a re-load this morning wont take all freakin' day. If I can get back out of Miami in a few hours I'll consider myself incredibly lucky. Next month I'll be back to Florida... but for vacation. The Mom, the sister Becky, and her hubby Dave along with myself will all be partaking in 5 all inclusive days in Walt Disney World. We're staying at the Polynesian so that'll make it easy to enjoy the luau on one of those nights.
Anyhow, back to my truckin'. This job is hard work, but I have to admit that I'm pretty satisfied. It took a while to find a situation I was happy with, but the last few years have been far more good than bad.
