Once upon a time I was an avid mountain biker. Actually, once upon a time (this being during high school) I was actually an avid ROAD biker. Suffice to say that aside from swimming, that cycling of some kind has been more or less my favorite sport. In fact, for a while after I got discharged from the Marines I worked as a service manager (aka mechanic) at a bike shop in Connecticut. Good times.
Then one day I stopped doing local trucking runs and went over the road. My Gary Fisher got hung up on hooks in my friend's basement and probably hasn't moved since. That was... numerous... years ago now. In the time since I began doing long haul trucking, my level of exercise declined from "a lot" to "none". I gained weight as well.
Well those who read my journal here regularly probably know that I've managed to lose a bit of weight lately. I'm down to about two and a quarter now, and would like to get things under 200 and stay that way. So far, any losses I've achieved have been solely through changes in my diet. But I admit, I have no self discipline. I'm writing this now, in fact, after having just shoveled down a huge fiesta omelette and a bowl of grits at the Waffle House in Hubbard, Ohio. Perhaps there's nothing wrong with that, but I know I could have eaten LESS than I did. The point is, I don't always make good food choices and I KNOW that the only way I am going to truly achieve my goals and maintain a reasonably healthy lifestyle is to start burning some calories.
I've also come to the realization that I really miss my sporting activities. I've become sedentary and have made feeble excuses about it for far too long. Limited room in the truck, not enough free time, yada yada.
Enough of that shit!
My plan, right now, is to buy one of these (or at least something similar and along these lines). It folds. It's quite portable. It's also custom-made to the buyer's size. And since the more you know about anything, the less satisfied you are with "cheap" stuff, you can bet your ass that I will most likely get near top of the line components. In other words, I'm expecting this to cost around two grand. I might have to delay the purchase of the new MacBook Pro a bit. I can live with that, if need be.
Anyhow, behold:
In other news, I have only about 6.5 hours of driving to do tomorrow. An easy day. Thus, I'm sitting here updating my journal, writing a few letters, and blasting Pink Floyd's "DSOTM" on my Sennheisers.
Only thing that'd make my mood better is a huge Guinness and someone to share it with. Or maybe she could get her own beer.

Had a few beers for you this evening. Also sanded drywall and primed 2 rooms. Fuck. Working on houses is a pain in the ass!
I too am going to start biking again!
Here's to getting "extreme"!!!
