I listen to a lot of radio. That should probably be obvious for those of you familiar with me and what I do for a living. When you drive as much as I do, radio becomes your primary form of entertainment. And much better than "Free FM", I'm a subscriber to Sirius satellite radio. Considering that you get 130 channels of entertainment, including the new and uncensored Howard Stern show, and over 60 music channels WITH NO COMMERCIALS EVER... the measly $13 monthly fee is a real bargain. How much do you pay a month for cable television, for example? But I digress. The point I'm trying to get at is simply that I listen to a lot of various radio programs.
One of the programs I hear is on Sirius's NPR channels... a program called "Weekend America". I imagine that the 'normal' NPR stations might also carry this program. Well, for the last couple of weeks they've had interviews with nuns. Yes, nuns. The nuns in question were basketball fans and from Cleveland and San Antonio respectively cheering and praying for their NBA teams.
I found it particularly interesting that nuns would PRAY to God for a basketball team to be victorious. Several things come to mind...
1) Is this really the best use of one's prayer time? I mean... professional sports. Men who make millions of dollars even if they lose. Of all the things one could possibly be praying for...
2) Why in the world would God give a shit about some insignificant, pitiful human sporting event? The idea of praying to God for... divine intervention? really rubs me the wrong way. Even as an atheist that idea offends me.
3) The nun from Cleveland (whose Cavaliers have been trounced by the San Antonio Spurs) said something of particular interest. She was justifying the fact that, despite her prayers, her team was losing miserably. She said something to the affect of "God helps those who help themselves". Implying that the Cavs weren't playing well, thus God didn't help them play well. Or something.
I'm here to tell you that is the biggest bunch of bullshit I have ever heard in my entire life, and a prime example of why I have consciously chosen to reject religion in my life. "God helps those who help themselves"? You have got to be kidding me. No, God doesn't help those people.... they helped themselves. This statement is akin to suggesting that if I paint my house black, that it was God's will that my house be black. God had nothing to do with it, nor did he have anything to do with the performance (or lack thereof) of either team in the NBA championship.
If you want something to happen in life, you either make it happen or you don't. Implying that God takes an active role in determining EVENTS is... laughable to me.
But you are free to believe whatever you want.

well, yeah, it's pretty cold here right now.
On "wait, wait don't tell me" this weekend there was a story about how in spains they used Nuns as test subjects to determine whether beer could reduce your cholesterol. The nuns had their cholesterol reduced an average of 6% when they were in 1/2 liter of beer a day.
Atheists aren't necessarily any better than religious person. Atheist leaders like stalin, mao, pol pot and others have killed millions in the name of political change. The human mind can be profoundly self-serving and can construe just about anything it wants as a justifying pretext for blatantly evil actions. Religion tends to fail to redeem peopel from evil, but I do not regard it as causative of evil.
