Here's what irritates me today:
I spent about 4 hours at home yesterday. That was it. First time I'd been by the house in 3 weeks. I don't particularly mind the 3 weeks out at all, in fact I requested the third week. But by not getting an actual weekend off it has essentially turned into 4 weeks out on the road. Anyhow, my delivery this morning was at the Wal-Mart distribution center in Raymond, New Hampshire. To avoid the Boston'esque traffic I made the majority of the trip here from Providence last night. So instead of sleeping at home I was in a rest area somewhat bored overnight. It took Wal-Mart 2.5 hours to unload my trailer (which was only half full). Then once it is done my company doesn't have anything already lined up for me to do next. So I'm waiting even MORE. All this fucking waiting around doing nothing, but yet I couldn't have a normal weekend off.
So that sucks pretty bad. In my company's defense, this doesn't happen too often and it is a situation that (almost) any truck driver working for any company will encounter from time to time.
Interestingly enough, this Wal-Mart DC has signs up that they're looking for drivers. I happened to tell the gate guard that I'd apply except that I didn't live around here. He suggested that it didn't really matter and they had plenty of drivers who lived in Rhode Island. So that is sort of interesting... I mean it's a bit of a commute but it isn't a daily thing. Plus Wal-Mart drivers get paid VERY well from what I hear. I don't have a car, however. I took an application and I'm going to hold onto it for a while I think. Perhaps I'll apply in the fall if they're still looking then. I'm not unhappy with my current company... not at all. There are good days and bad days no matter who you work for. But it would be difficult to turn down such a lucrative offer as one from Wal-Mart should that situation ever present itself.
