Finding this collection of rare 1923 Grimms Fairy Tale illustrations by Gustaf Tenggren has made my day.
I can't put my finger on exactly what it is that makes this stuff so much better than more recent illustrations in the same genre. There are some obvious things, like the absence of bright colour and cartoonified figures, and the charm of traditional media and intimate detail, but then there's something else, too... what is it? And can someone please put it in a jar and give me some?
