Hierarchy at my work:
At the top was Dave (site manager). And he was great guy. Always came around on birthdays and before holidays to talk to everyone, and ask questions about how things are going.
Dave left and was replaced by Glenn a couple months ago. My immediate supervisor, Jerry, was (and still is) dirctly below Glenn. Glenn is now the site manager, and Jerry is in charge of all of the finish steps in the book bindery (I believe that's everything from binding to packaging to shipping).
Jerry's nephew, Chris, works directly under Jerry and is the laziest sonofabitch that I've ever met. He walks off the job whenever he gets a chance. When he's supposed to be helping someone out, he'll start calling people on his cell phone. Desmond and I had to confiscate his cell phone one day because he was on it for half an hour straight. He eats on the job and gets food all over the books. And he smells bad. I try not to judge people on their appearances, but he's filthy and smells like he's been living the life of a gutter punk. He wears the same dirty clothes every day and rarely brushes his teeth. He snorts pain killers during lunch and is frequently hung over on the job Chris shouldn't have any authority. He's been there only a few months, yet he's already making more than any other male full-time employee in my department. He shouldn't even be making the base pay since he's still technically in his probationary period. He's full time but never works a 40 hour week. I'm part time, and they give me hell for not working 40+ hours a week during the summer! If they don't pay me full time wages, then why should I work full time hours?
Some of the guys and I have been talking about what to do about Chris. A lot of us worked really hard to not get laid off during the slow season, but many of my hardworking coworkers were forced to take lay offs. The remaining people who stayed never got even a 30 hour week for over 2 months. Chris on the other hand managed to get over time when noone else could even get a 40 hour week in. Sounds fishy doesn't it?
Desmond and I are gonna make sure there's some kinda accident. Nothing serious. But it'll look worse than it is. Any injury on the job has to be reported. Anyone who is injured on the job has to take a piss test to determine if they're on drugs. You can look at Chris and tell that he needs detox.
I know what Jerry's going to say when I see him on Tuesday: "Why're you causing trouble here when you're only here to make ends meet while you go to school?" Maybe I should choose my battles and not just raise hell whenever I see something wrong at my work. But maybe my coworkers should realize that they all agree with each other, and that if they raised their voices, that the company would have no choice but to be heard.

morgan:
I never understand the expression "choose your battles". Is the implication that I have a busy schedule and not enough time for battles, so I should be picky? Because I have plenty of time on my hands and I might as well spend it all with battles if I like.
