Japanese. New Wave.
In the form of a film called, "Cruel Story of Youth". It's a hard to find little fucker, but still worth the scavenge.
It's relatively simple. Two kids meet up, hook up, and do their thing. The boy brawls and the girl gets pregnant.
It was made in the 60's, right around the French New Wave movement, and IMO it stands right up there with the Beret's. I do think that the French were masters of pacing though, as I never get bored with Godard but this film had some tedious pacing at times.
It's absolutely beautiful though, with some long takes that are just works of art. One scene that comes to mind is this long take of this girl trying to swim herself to safety as she is kicked out further.. the perpetrator's legs the only indicator he's there. The New Wave style is in full effect, with jump cuts and tracking shots.. including a few behind the front seat car scenes.
I watched it on VHS, and as far as I know there is not a DVD version; it's not even on Netflix. If you're in college the library may have it, it's where I found mine.
