Happy New Year all!
It was a pretty dang good year, I bought a lot of music and liked a lot of what I bought. Here are 20 + that I dug and some I didn't:
20.The Stills- Rememberese e.p./One Candle Power- not with a bang, but a whimper e.p. Cool Quebecoise rocking.
19. Kinski Airs Above Your Station
18. Lost in Translation - Soundtrack
Best movie of the year, best music too. Kevin Shields lives.
17. Eroica Trio Beethoven Triple Concerto Op.56 Piano Trip Op. II
Saw them put on a stunning show here with the Symphony last September doing this program. This rocks.
16. Jayhawks- Rainy Day Music
Great return to form.
15. Britta Phillips and Dean Wareham Sonic Souveniers & LAventura
I'm in love with Britta's voice.
14. Distillers Coral Fang
I'm in love with Brody's everything.
13. The Creatures Hai!
Dig that cool drumming, they still got it.
12. Paul Weller - Illumination
Just really great, I love Paul Weller, what can I say?
11. Johnny Cash - Unearthed
10. The Kills Keep on Your Mean Side
9. Over the Rhine - Ohio
Beautiful double album by a fantastically talented Ohio group.
8 .Tim Easton Break Your Mothers Heart
Poor, Poor LA and Hummingbird are masterpieces.
7 .Android Lust The Dividing
Got me to dig out my old industrial albums.
6 .Cat Power You Are Free
5 .Sun Kil Moon Ghosts of the Great Highway
Sounds like a great Neil Young or Jay
Farrar album. Hell, I wish either of them would have made an album this good this year. Plus I gotta give points to anyone who puts a tune named Duk Koo Kim on
his album. Yes, Boom Boom was from my home town...
4 .Party of Helicopters Please Believe It
Iron Maiden, Yes, Built to Spill, Rush, Judas Priest, Shudder to Think all rolled into one tidy package. Killer gtr.
3 .Forget Cassettes- Instruments of Action
Favorite new band!
2 .Twilight Singers Blackberry Belle
Big surprise for me, I know. More great stuff from Greg Dulli and the best concert of the year for me. Would be number 1 but for...
1 .White Stripes Elephant
I don't care how popular they got, this album is titanic and will stand as one of the best albums of
the decade. It blew me away the first time I heard it and I still like it at the end of the year. They step into the big leagues and they damn well deserve it.
More stuff I liked, but not enough to rank them:
Azure Ray- Hold on Love
Long Winters When I Pretend to Fall
Slumber Party - 3
Jay Farrar-Terroir Blues
Elvis Costello - North
Nick Cave Nocturama
Shelby Lynne- Identity Crisis
Shoulda got:
Outkast
Didnt do much for me:
My Morning Jacket It Still Moves
Drive by Truckers Decoration Day
Ted Leo
Didnt get to listen to enough:
Paul Westerberg- Come Feel Me Tremble
Grandpaboy Dead Man Shake
Radiohead Hail to the Thief
Pretty Girls Make Graves- The New Romance
Fruitbats - Mouthfuls
A sabbatical may be in order, really:
Loose Fur- Loose Fur
Minus 5 Down with Wilco
Ryan Adams - um, I lost track
How's by you?
