Jeez... I'm almost 33. How the hell did that happen?

After the single-digit years, palindromic birthdays arrive a little over a decade apart... so they've gotta be savored. Or something.

Who am I kidding? Birthday or not, all I can think about is what's gonna happen next on Lost. I can't think of the last time a TV show has sucked me in this...

There are several gray spots on my friends list now. And although many people remove the names who go gray pretty quickly, I generally don't -- partly because I've never been a tidy person, and partly just in the hope that they'll be back and participating before long. Taking them off the list seems like giving up that hope.

That said, very few of the...

I saw this movie a couple months ago. Very impressive. Is it still out somewhere, or is this interview timed to promote the DVD release?

You went to BYU? You poor man. I went to Provo High which was across the street from BYU. When ever I'm down, I think that it could be worse--I could still live in Provo.

I went to see The Tiptons (an amazing all-girl saxophone quartet) at the Goodfoot Lounge the other night. I've seen them before (back when they were still calling themselves The Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet), but Amy Denio was taking a break from the band back then. She's playing with the Tiptons again now, though, and is as amazing as ever. As was Jessica Lurie,...

Good article.

The local museum's schedule includes The General this summer. Apparently a local band has put together their own original score for it. They'll be set up next to the screen and play during the movie. Should be interesting.

I'm almost home! I left DC nine days ago with a heavy heavy carload of stuff (I also shipped about 20 boxes and filled a dumpster and a half or so on my own). From there, it was two nights in Chicago with my earliest and longest friend, two nights in St. Louis with my best friend from high school & beyond, a night stranded...

Looks like a great time. What's the eta on your Portland move?
I think I'm sticking around DC for another year.

Good luck. You're getting out of here right before the weather becomes unbearable. smile

It's official. I've given notice to my apartment complex and my employer... I've started shipping stuff... I'm moving home to Portland at the end of March.

I grew up in Portland, and have cumulatively spent about 22 years of my life there. If I'm lucky, I'll spend the rest there too.

A few days ago, I came across this journal entry by Gonzoe. I don't know Gonzoe, but he seems like a nice guy, and his entry is notable to me for a couple of reasons...

First, the photo of semitopless Twister includes the only SG I know in real, actual life. smile

Second, a paragraph from this entry made me suddenly realize why I've never...

You really do need to change that. Paths of Glory is very, very, very good. Personally I rank it number three with Strangelove at 1 and Clockwork at 2.

I'm annoyed, the Keaton movies I ordered still have not arrived. You know, unless they came while I was in Chicago and the mailman left them on my steps and they were stolen, but let's hope that didn't happen.
nopantsdave:
Finally got the dvd's I ordered. I have watched four Keaton films in the last couple of days. Good stuff. Parlor, Bedroom & Bath ended up being kinda like Taming of the Shrew. The Villain Still Pursued Her was super-over-the-top-melodrama, but it was so over the top that it's funny, it's gotta be a parody of the stuff that was around back then. Speak Easily was Keaton just being the straight man for an hour and a half, still quite funny. I liked The General, there were some damn funny moments.

Penn and Teller don't update their road essays very frequently... but when they do, they're always worth reading. Two recent entries by Teller (first, second) detail the story behind an intimate two-day concert of Bartok quartets performed by the Colorado Quartet, an affair Teller originally organized for himself and a few friends, but opened up some pricey tickets to the public to...

I'm hanging in the Portland airport right now (they've added free wifi access since last year!) waiting for my flight home after another Christmas in Portland (well, Vancouver, Washington, actually, since my parents moved there a couple years ago... but it's just across the river). I think I've spent every Christmas here in the Portland area since I was born, except for two of them...

I agree completely. It's the easiest thing in the world to be a critic; actually doing something about the things you criticize is the key. I'm glad you had a good holiday. I enjoyed the time with my family as well, even though my mom tries to cajole me into moving home every time I visit.

Another Friday, another weekend, an assload of great movies opening... so things are pretty good.

I leave for Portland next Thursday to visit family & friends, and while I'm there I have a job interview lined up that I think will go well. So I may be going back home permanently before long... biggrin
