Well.
The readings went very well, and thanks to everyone who asked. I am glad that they are over, though I am planning on reading sometime in the fall again (if I can write some new work).
The good news is that I am going to be teaching in the summer. Freshman Comp, if anyone is interested in brushing up on their thesis statement skills.
Nothing is really happening. It's Spring Break here (we're late, but we got 3 days off for Mardi Gras), and I should be working, but I just have been reading off and on and watching movies (just watched Exotica...last night it was Breakfast on Pluto....that was good, but read the book!).
Another question?
What's your definition of pornography?
Here's what a feminist says:
Pornography, the feminist view, is a form of forced sex, a practice of sexual politics, an institution of gender inequality. In this perspective, pornography is not harmless fantasy or a corrupt and confused misrepresentation of an otherwise natural and healthy sexuality. With the rape and prostitution in which it participates, pornography institutionalizes the sexuality of male supremacy, which fuses the erotization of dominance and submission with the social construction of male and female. Gender is sexual. Pornography constitutes the meaning of that sexuality. Men treat women as who they see women as being. Pornography constructs who that is. Mens power over women means that the way men see women defines who women can be. Pornography is that way. (Catherine A. MacKinnon p147, from "Pornography: Not a Moral Issue." Radical Voices: A Decade of Feminist Resistance from Women's Studies International Forum.)
You know, I try to be a good feminist, but it usually just doesn't work out that way for me. I am extremely pro-woman, but I am also extremely pro-man, as well. I just don't think things are as black and white (or as cut and dry, if you prefer) as some feminists (and other groups who attach an -ist to the end of their name) believe it to be.
But what do you guys think? What is your definition of pornography?
