Ahh...
Tomorrow I am participating in a reading downtown. I am not sure how I feel about it just yet. I picked out some of the poems I am going to read, but haven't decided on anything just yet.
The big reading is on Saturday. For that (if you have been reading my journal, you already know this), I collaborated with an abstract animation filmmaker, and we set one of my poems to a short film. I recorded the poem on Monday, and hopefully it will be finished tomorrow or Friday so I can get a better look at it before we show it. If you are anywhere near the Blue Moon Saloon on Saturday, you should come check it out. There will be other poets pairing their work with musicians, painters, and photographers, and I think there is another short film, so it should be a fun time.
On another note, no work has been done, and I feel pretty good about that. I have been writing my syllabi for the classes I am teaching in the fall, which is something, I guess. I am aniticpating working my ass off during spring break, though I may end up just lying around, watching movies the entire time.
I am thinking of posting a poem on my next journal entry, so you might want to come back for that one.
What else is there? My life is all about work (well, the work I am not doing, anyway) right now. Perhaps when I start getting into the depths of my thesis, my journals will become more interesting. My thesis (which will deal mainly with cinematic images in poetry) is going to be centered on women as objects of the "gaze," and how it can be an empowering experience, which totally goes against the whole feminist idea that women in any aspect of the sex industry (I will be focusing primarily on pornography) are objects and, by extension, victims. At any rate, I am looking to create a series of short films to go along with some of my poems. It should be an interesting project, and and I might solicit comments from you lovely people.
And, for the record, I think a monkey emoticon is the perfect lone image for a journal entry. From that, you should have been able to tell that I spent three years working with chimps in a cognitive research environment, that I am a rather curious animal by nature, that I like to groom members of my species, and that I am a big fan of Japanese Shock cinema.
But for now, if any of you are out there, let me pose this question to you:
How natural do you think it is to look at pornography? Recent estimates show that pornography generates more income than all of the US professional sporting clubs combined. This is despite the fact that most "morally straight" US citizens deny any attraction to pornography. Why do you think the individual attraction to pornography is greater than the group consensus that "pornography is bad"?
Discuss.

-Well, I suppose it depends on what type of "pornography" we're talking about. Tastefull pornography I'd say is pretty natural to want to look at. After all, sexual drive seems to be second to hunger in many people, and people eat 3-5 times a day, so why lot look at porn every once in a while?
The "icky pornography" as I like to call it (I won't get graphic, but it's the images I think should stay in medical books) I don't think is natural...but then, I suppose if that's what turns someone on, then it's natural for them.

Because people like keeping secrets. I think for some people it's funner to say they don't look at pornography, then sneak onto their computer or pull out their magazine when no one is looking.
