ok, i've been playing some new music of late and here are some of my personal remarks and whatnot.
The Datsuns
Outta Sight, Outta Mind
first off, i love The Datsuns. their first lp is just balls-out rock. they didn't try to re-invent the wheel, they just kicked some serious ass. also, the live show is just fucking amazing!
that said, the new record...under whelming at best. two songs aside, this lp is a dud. this makes me a sad little boy. gone is the before mentioned "balls-out" sound that i fell in love with. now they sound like took their balls off and put them in a little jar before they headed to the studio to cut this piece or horse shit.
my grade: c-
Clinic
Winchester Cathedral
Clinic's record
Internal Wrangler kicked all the ass (and continues to do so). their follow-up, Walking With Thee was in my humble opinion the most disappointing record of 2002. Winchester Cathedral falls somewhere in the middle of the two. solid overall, but lacking the spark of their earlier work. maybe they can get it all worked out by the next the record.
my grade: B
Interpol
Antics
i can't say anything good or bad about Interpol that hasn't been said to death in the past two years.
ok, i dig Interpol's first LP LOT"S.
and now after milking the shit out of the last lp they finally cut some new material.
the expectation are enormous this time around. and after bands like the Strokes and White Stripes lived up to they hype following the records that made them huge, Interpol delivers.
make no mistake, this is no Turn On The Bright Lights, but it's good. it's solid. and dare i say...bouncy? yup.
so love'em or hate'em, Interpol will be everywhere (again) by the end of the summer, touring like mad, screwing groupies, and hoarking record buyers (like me) with endless 7'' singles and remix ep's galore.
my grade: B+
i'll talk about the new Libertines LP in the near future. i just got it today and need to absorb it before we sink our teeth into that one.
