Bah! Why is it I can never be bothered to update this thing anymore?
In regards to my last entry, the Darkbuster show was an absolute blast and easily elevated them to one of my current favorite bands. If you haven't seen them, I VERY STRONGLY advise you to make every effort to remedy that situation ASAP. They're on that Boston Invasion tour right now with the Dropkick Murphys, Gang Green (!), and Lost City Angels. We had quite an adventure that night as we met some cool folks down in Alby (Duke City). We were offered a place to crash (Lenny, the singer from Darkbuster, actually went out of his way to try to hook us up with people he knew in the area so we wouldn't have to drive three and a half hours home at 3 a.m.) and went to an all night diner to eat first and the girl who had offered up space went AWOL. Fortunately several other people we met were there too and ended up offering up slightly less comfortable digs (with a fair bit of sketchiness attached) to us. We took them up on that and earned ourselves some bonus punk points by crashing on the floor in an emptied out apartment that one of our newfound friends had recently been evicted from. We finally got to sleep around 5 only to be woken up by frenzied pounding on the door at 9. Thinking it must be the cops or the apartment management, we all freaked a bit before our gracious host peeked out and discovered it was just his girlfriend. Good times.
Not much goin' on today, I hear there might be some bands playing down at a local dive, so we'll probably make our way there later. Band practice went well on Thursday, but got fucked up yesterday, so is rescheduled for tomorrow. Hopefully we can get a little further along before Zero's job takes her out of town for a month.
Some new recommendations for all my faithful readers......
The Bones, I just picked up Straight Flush Ghetto and can't stop listening to it. Reminds me of some kind of crazy mix of Turbonegro and Social Distortion. Great amped up Rock 'N' Roll.
Of course the new CD from Darkbuster called A Weakness For Spirits has to be mentioned. I've loved everything I've heard from these guys, but this disk destroys everything they've done so far. Great singalongs that make you feel like you've been listening to these songs for years without it being tired or yet another ripoff. The funny songs still make me laugh after the hundredth play through and they all make me wanna dance like a fool the way I did at the show.
I also recently picked up The Killer Inside Me, a book by Jim Thompson that was written in 1952 and fits into my love of crime fiction brilliantly. If you like James Ellroy and that sort of gritty, violent, but with no excuses type of writing, pick this up. I admit, he doesn't seem to have really lived some of this stuff the way Ellroy has, and the time this was written seems to be indicated by things like his idea of the effects of marjuana (he has a scene where the main character, a sherrif's deputy, deals with a guy who gets all violent because he's all "hopped up on the grass"), but it's well written enough to get past that anyway.
Another great band that needs mentioning is Easy Action. John Brannon's (ex Negative Approach and Laughing Hyenas vocalist) amazing Rock 'N' Roll band. They have a fairly new album out called Friends Of Rock And Roll, you can hear the title track of if you click that link to their myspace page. VERY highly recommended.
That's all for now.
