a friend's brother died last night
and somehow dimmed the light
of such a sunshiney day
and i never really knew him
what can i really say

so i picked up rocks with my toes
and wondered about lives
and where our souls go

i saw some whirlybirds scattered around
and they looked like dead faires
had fallen to the ground

and i saw that everything dies soon
sooner than wanted
and it sometimes makes us swoon
it sometimes makes us daunted
i hope that i'm not haunted....

by memories turned bad
of lives i've lived and things i've had
i'd rather not live that way
i'd rather go out with a flash
and have someone say...

hey! remember that kid
from way back when
we really did not know him
but we thought we did know then
and do we know ourselves
or do we tuck it all away
high up on a shelf...

for some sunshiney day
when a friend's brother has died
and you don't know what to say

but you can only offer tears
tears just like her own
tears that might just make her happy
and not feel so all alone
