Freedome, finals are all done, which means I get to post photo documentation of my now completed performance piece!
With the description of the action below, all thats missing is the music and monolgue/poem... and of course the experience of sitting 3 feet in front of me when I snap a knife in two from chopping wood
Here's the short version of my Artists Statement for all to enjoy:
In Love Songs 3, I am battling preconceived notions of sexuality constructed through religion and gender. Projected over top of my stick wielding body, my lips are being smothered in red paint while my teeth are blackened with ink in a mockery of the painted face of the feminine mask. The paint puts the projection of myself in the female role, while beneath, my masculinity is destroyed in a fit of testosterone driven rage. The obviously male words coming from the symbol of female sexuality questions the division between male and female sexuality. After stripping down and beginning an attack on my stick in the middle of the lips, it becomes unclear whether the feminine or masculine side is the aggressor, or submissive. The interaction then comes to a climatic burst; with the destruction of the masculinity (as the knife and stick break), and the femininity (when the paint hardens to a deteriorated form of the lips and cracks apart in the motion from the words). The two sides are bonded together with the same material they were divided with (metal), and in the fusion they become the symbol that is meant to destroy the sin they represent.
