As for last night, it was not all that bad. We got drunk at the hotel and later went to a club downtown. We had heard there was going to be a death metal band there but it turned out to be just a bunch of dance music. My moment of the night was this girl who came to over to talk to me. Thirty year old who just got out of college. She's going to be an elementary teacher. My friends thought that I would end up leaving the club with her. Not the case though as she was there with a few friends and they had to drive back to Birmingham later.
Last night did have it's sad moments though...
I went to a public school up until I was a sophmore. I got in trouble so my parents put me in a catholic school. There are a lot of teen deaths due to car wreaks in my area. About a month ago I was thinking about how lucky the catholic school I went to was. Since it began nine years ago, there have been no student or alumni deaths. Well last night I found out that on the 20th this girl who was a grade ahead of me died in a wreck. A 16 year old kid who was stoned, drunk, and doped up on pills ran a red light and hit the side of her car. Her boyfriend was in the car with her too. He survived with the wreck, but is in icu with a fractured back, fractured neck, collapsed lung, broken ribs, other broken bones. I was not really close to her, but I knew her well enough to know that she was a great person. From what I understand, nobody ever had anything bad to say about her. My friend Charlie was very close to her though. He was visiting from college when it happened. He told me that a few days before it happened, her Ryan (her boyfriend) had told him that he had a ring he was about to give her. These two had been together for years. Now he will never be able to pop the question. All that I can say about the kid without being too much of a hypocrite is that he made a stupid fucking mistake. Many of us that hung out together, even I, have at one time been guilty of driving drunk. It's not something that I am proud of doing. I learned my lesson my senior year when I totalled my car, and lived through it with only a scratch. I was lucky I did not die. Even more lucky that I did not kill someone else. Living with the death of an innocent stranger on my hands would be torture. This kid will have to do just that. His life is totally fucked now. He is being charged with manslaughter and assault. For the rest of his life he will have to live with this. Because of his choice people have lost a friends, a guy will no longer be able to propose to the girl he loves, and a mother will no longer be able to enjoy spending time with her only daughter. I know many people would probably disagree with me on this, but I actually feel sorry for the kid who caused all of this. Because of the wreckless actions, many lives have been fucked.
