I have been working relentlessly for eight months trying to adapt Sinclair Lewis’ “It Can’t Happen Here,” his wonderful/horrific/timely agitprop novel, for the stage. I had planned to run 9-11 throufh Halloween for the 2020 election. But...
Regardless of my experience in adapting 19th and 20th century literature for theatre, some prose simply refuses to translate to the stage (so read it!) Then came covid-19, housing/financial crises, along with the realization we should be doing readings/casting by now... I just had to sigh, and throw in the towel.
I still plan to produce “marathon public readings” (whether onstage or online). This is exactly what Sinclair Lewis did when he could not successfully adapt his own novel to the stage.
I shoulda known better than to compete with a Pulitzer Prize winner!
Okay, on to the next logical stumbling block! Hope this finds all of you and yours well. Please stay that way.
