I saw a dear friend buried this week.
He was all those things people say when they lose someone...Sweet, kind, funny...only in Steve's case it was all true.
His death was also a huge shock to all who knew him. Not simply because of his age but I think due to his disposition. When you brought his name up people just smiled. He was so many good things but also he was not so many things...Steve did not get drunk and pick fights, indeed for many years he was sober. You never heard of him getting arrested, getting a DWI, he wasn't the guy who lost his apartment and needed to sleep on your couch. In over twenty five years I never saw Steve in a bar and avoided him because he was too messed up or drunk.
I am afraid this was what allowed him to fly under the radar with his demons.
When I thought of him, when someone mentioned him I thought, and think of him smiling. Telling bad jokes. Sitting at the drums with a dozen or more bands I was fortunate enough to see him play with over the years.
Steve never cried in his beer (or Soda and lemon) or on my shoulder....Now I wish he had.
We need to look out for one another. Keep an eye on those you love.
Steven your timing was always impeccable till now. This was way too early.
Love Mark
