A master and his student are meditating in the village temple. Suddenly the master asks the student "Student, where are you?'
The student replies "In the temple with you master."
"No," the master says, "that is incorrect. Again I ask, where are you?"
The student has come to be patient with these vague, openended questions, because there is always a lesson to be learned. "I am in our village master."
"No." says the master. "You are again incorrect. Student, where are you?"
The students thinks he has grasped the meaning of his master's question. "I am at one with everything master."
Suddenly the master's hand strikes the back of the student's head. "Not if you cannot grasp this simple question fool!"
Again the student is patient. This is all part of the master's technique. Life's lessons are sometimes gentle, sometimes harsh. So it is with his master.
The master growls, "Student, where are you?"
The students lets go of his thoughts for a moment. Questions such as these must be answered while one is simply there. Not doing, not thinking, just there. Suddenly the answer is upon him.
"I am here, master."
The master smiles ever so faintly. Only those who know him as well as his students would ever see such an expression. "Very good student. And when is it?"
"It is now, master."
The master chuckles softly. "Very good my student. Very good."
The two return to silent meditation.
The lesson for today. Honor the past and be mindful of the future. Know your place in the world. But always be present in the here and now.
