First off, I made a new years resolution, despite the fact that I am adverse to them. I promised not to drink any sparkling wines in 2008. I have yet to meet a sparkling wine I can enjoy. I've met some that I don't dislike and even some that taste alright (the crossings blanc de blanc from new hope, pa is one that comes to mind). But I have yet to have one that I do enjoy. This ban does not apply to prosecco though. I have been known to enjoy a bottle or two on rare occasions.
I hosted a champagne tasting on new years eve, and tried about 12 varieties. It would be naive of me to suggest that I could somehow rank these, as both my palate and wallet prevent me from doing so - but taking price into consideration, as a man who is not quite yet considered French aristocracy must do, my ranking of favorites per cost are as follows:
1/2) Moet White Star/Pierre Jouet Grande Brut
3) Bollinger NV
4) Pierre Jouet Blason Rose
5) Cristal
6) Veuve Clicquot Rose
7) Dom Perignon
