What a terrifying and exciting day! First, the good news. A pretty shot of the Medicine Man with a seed and some purpling leaves.
The thing about purpling in marijuana plants is that it's highly variable. I had three tall ladies and two of them had virtually no purple in them at all, but this one did. So what made the difference? This one had a little spider mite attack over the summer, which I thought I had warded off, but you can see evidence of it in the lower right leaf. Other than that it seemed like they had identical conditions. Phenotypes and genotypes have a lot to do things like coloration, but without going too deeply into it, you never know for sure just what's going to happen.
Which brings us to the horrifying part. I came face to face with a spider mite on this plant!! Just got curious taking some close-ups of the trichomes seeing if I could capture the purple with my microscopic attachment to my iPhone. Instead, this is what I saw.
I was just coming on to the peanut butter cookie I'd had for desert after dinner and it was the shock of my life to suddenly be totally stoned and staring directly at a giant spidermite! So I had planned just to get the seeds out of this batch and then pitch it due to the spidermite damage on it even though I hadn't seen any mites. Whoa! Definitely pitchin' this batch. Packed with perfectly healthy seeds, though. That's the good news.
