Hey, most of you will TL;DR. so go ahead and click away now.
On sunday I'll hit a milestone, birthday wise. I do love my birthday, I dont tend to make a big spectacle, but I use the anniversary of my birth as an excuse to consume copius amount of world class food and top shelf booze. 364 days a year I'm willing to put up with busch light and smirnoff next to my hamburger helper or shake'n'bake.. because its better for the household. However on sunday I will be eating nothing but black angus and filet mignon with sides of crown royal and belvedere.
Its also time to reflect of what I may or may not have accomplished. I've done well, job wise, without a college degree. I make more than several people I know *with* bachelor degrees. But I'm not where I expected I should be all those years ago. I've seen several continents, but only in passing as any time I left the country (with the exception of my weekend paradise in Canada) its always been work related and I was more or less there to do a job and leave.
I'm still working without a net.. which is to say, I have no safe fallback. Due to bills, a stint with unemployment, and shit going wrong just when I need it to be right I don't have a cushion in case something happens. Every morning I wake up with fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong. I may have a nest, but there is no egg in it.
This year I'm hoping to set us up for the next 5. I'm used to working on a shoestring budget and we've got some extra cash starting to come in that I'd like to put aside. Its tempting, of course, to spend our new found funds to bring our lower-middle class lifestyle up to middle class.. but not having to worry about insurance bills, electric, and rent would be nice. I'll have to set up a seperate fund for it so I can't get access to it at an ATM.. because, you know, temptation.
Otherwise, I'm another year older and lesser in debt.. I'm beholden to one credit card for about $500, but that's nothing. Ask me about how I walked away from $50,000.00 in credit cards and I'll tell you how I ruined my credit score.. But my bills are payable, my phone isnt blowing up with collectors. I have a nice townhouse with lots of space and it time I got my shit straight.
2011 is the year of Jhay.
