I really dig these guys. I first saw Backyard Tire Fire when they came thru Detroit with the Reverend Horton Heat and Nashville Pussy. Even though they were the unknown opening band, they put on a better show than the other 2 acts. They came back thru my neck of the woods, as a solo act, about 3 weeks before we moved to the south and we went to go see them again.. the place was empty. There were 4 of us, and the band, and some waitstaff. So we got a chance to hang out and drink beers with them. They signed a CD I bought and gave Dryad a deal on a lil tank top. They used to live in Asheville so we talked to them about the new area we'd be moving to and they were super cool.
I found out on Monday that they'd be in the Asheville area on the 7th. So I decided to treat myself to an early birthday present and we went to see them.. again they were super cool.. the place maybe had 30 people in it. I talked for awhile with the singer about their tour.. he remembered telling us about the car trouble they had last time we hung out and we went on at length about their search for a new touring van. Shared beers. Good times. If they ever tour near me, no matter where they are at, I'll make a point to support them because you couldnt ask for better music made by better people.
They were the headliners this time around, with their opening band being South Memphis String Band, a very bluesy southern band which was really amazing. Steel guitars, mandolins, harmonicas and kazoos! I should have recognized Luther Dickenson from the Black Crowes, but he looked more like Johnny Depp at the show. Real classy guys and laid back music. I'll leave you with a little tune of theirs, called "Don't worry about the whole world, worry bout your own back yard"
Stay classy, bitches!
