With the site turning 15 recently, I thought it might be an idea to check out its earlier years. In 2001, I was entering my second year of teaching, my kids had turned 6 and 4 respectively, and my ideals of feminine perfection could mostly be found in the pages of Playboy and on Danni.com. I’m trying to remember what the attitude to ‘alternative’ beauty was back then. I’m not sure, to be honest. I’m a neophyte when it comes to this site and my 31 year old self was incredibly ‘straight’.
So perusing the sets of 2001 was an interesting and eye-opening experience. Others much more knowledgeable than me can correct me (and I’ll be delighted if they do), but there’s a raw, underground edge to early SG. It is possible, though, to identify what I suppose you could call the ‘DNA’ of the site in these early sets – the sense of fun, playfulness and creativity are very much present. As is the edgy alternative vibe that relies on inventive camerawork (most of which is courtesy of @missy) as much as it does on the looks of the models.
And the early girls are sexy. Here are five of them…
@Voltaire has fifteen sets on the site and is still active posting blogs and pics on her wall. This pic is taken from Striped Stockings and, I think, showcases perfectly her appeal. Great hair, beautiful art and a thoroughly infectious smile, she's just so pretty...
@leia is lovely. Only three sets, but two of them are particularly impressive - Lolita Leia and Leather Leia, from which this pic is taken. Leia is exceptionally pretty and has a knockout smile. Her sets may be few in number but they make a heck of an impression nevertheless.
@celia has eight sets on the site. I've chosen this pic from Celia and the Radio, because it exemplifies the sublime collision of alternative glamour and old-school pin-up sensibilities. It's also, apparently, Celia's first ever photoshoot. @missy does a great job with the theme and the pics.
@echo has six sets on the site and this is taken from the first of them. I think she's incredibly pretty and this set, Dreamer, is her second one for the site. The leather choker is a nice touch, contrasting rather powerfully with her fresh, innocent charms. It's an awesome set.
The last SG who really caught my eye is @rose. She's the original SG and has updated her blog as recently as 2013. She has sixteen sets on the site and this is taken from the third one, Rose and the Slip. Perhaps more than any other girl from SG's debut year, she epitomises the ethos of the site - incredibly pretty and exuding an edgy confident attitude that is extremely sexy. That is particularly true of this set.
So, that's my quick survey of 2001. The first set was released on 3rd September 2001, so there's not a massive amount to look through, but what there is is well worth your time - not only because the girls themselves are sexy, but because their sets give an insight into how this unique and wonderful place has developed.
