I hate the word "call." A lazy word for lazy people. I read an otherwise excellent article in Collectors Weekly this morning about the development of San Francisco's housing crisis, and at the end the author wrote that "Major publications like the San Francisco Chronicle are using their voices to call for more housing construction..." What an insipid fucking word. Are they really "calling" for more construction? Or do they perhaps demand more housing construction? Maybe they advocate for more housing construction. It could be that they propose more housing construction, or request it, or any of the other synonyms that are more descriptive and memorable and sometimes even more powerful than that fucking word "call." It really twists my nips to read good writers resorting to such uninspired garbage. Get creative! You have an entire language at your disposal! You went to college to do one thing, so do it with some flair and style and originality!
