The most painful thing about adulthood is the final realisation that there are no guarantees. The illusion of safety stays with us for so long that it feels physically painful when it's gone, when you realise no matter what you've done or what has happened to you nothing is guaranteed, no justification is necessarily forthcoming, and happiness is never certain.
