I found some cool pictures (ala MTV) from this past Lollapalooza, which I will lace throughout this entry.
^ CSS ^ (how does LoveFoxxx perform in these hot outfits? I love her!)
So does anyone remember when Lollapalooza was a traveling show? These pictures make me really sad that it's in name only now. Considering that a lot of people are really young here, Lollapalooza was this outdoor traveling show with 5 or 6 headlining acts and then multiple indie bands on a smaller stage. It's a funny thing to recall being that today's monster festival shows are the current what-it-is-ya'll.

Right: 5 or 6 to the main stage, end of story. The idea of 30-bands-per day festival shows is really unpleasant to me. I used to love the Lollas where you'd see one band, wander around for a while, look at the booths that were selling stuff (I was actually registered to vote at one booth: VERY USEFUL), meet people and then oh hey, let's see the little stage now. It was leisurely. Take note of that: ONE main stage, ONE small stage. Fuck multiple stages....overkill SUCKS!

Best part: the ticket price was under $30. UNDER $30!!! I went to a total of 3 but 1 got rained out and I had to go home after only seeing a then new & little known act called Cypress Hill on the small stage. I can't recall the other 2 and whom all I saw, because I remember this was the type of thing you just bought a ticket for reguardless. If there was someone you wanted to see, that was a bonus. It was that much fun.
^Rhyme Fest & Mark Ronson^
I remember the Beastie Boys, Smashing Pumpkins, The Breeders, Stereolab, Dinosaur Jr., George Clinton, Primus, Babes In Toyland, oh hell : History of Lollapalooza line ups. Note most of the action was always on the second stage.
The best of my memories of course are a very intimidating set by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. I was terrified of him. Now I'm mildly obsessed with him, but back then he scared me down to my little mary janes, I swear. Now he scares me down to my panties.

I think it's really beat-street that the name has retained itself but it's a one-shot monster fest in Chicago. Why Chicago!? Seeing as California has Coachella, I would think Lolla could have the decency to root itself in NY. But don't get me wrong I just think the lump sum is lame, end of story. Cheap way to attract in keeping the name. I wish someone would start up a new Lolla but I'm afraid the fests have taken over current styles and expectations. And yes, yes I know fully well that the fests have to be easier on the performers. I bet the traveling show had nightmarish qualities.

Part 2
My mother looked at this ^ Black Kids ^ picture and said
"Who is that, Jimi Hendrix?"
and I said "Ma, is he black?"
And she said, "Yes Jena, are you kidding?"
I have a major announcement: I have been in love with the Black Kids all year thus far, seen pictures, videos, and I swear to God never noticed that Reggie & Ali Youngblood are apparently black. They could be mixed you know.
^ I thought Ali was Latin looking but it turns out I just needed to search more pictures of them, apart from being mildly retarded. However look at Reggie's hair here:
My natural hair is not a hell of a lot further off from this.
I've been mistaken for black or multi on many occasions in my day, even by black folk. So to my defense, this is how I could miss something as retarded as overlooking there being black folks in Black Kids.
Anyoo Reggie is my new crush. As I've said before, I go for really weird looking men and he is top notch. Plus I am in love with his hair. We got tickets to see them next month, I'm freaking out. The album, Partie Traumatic is booty-shakin'...and I have been seduced by the coy use of the love-term "boo" on Hit the Heartbrakes"...sigh.
Imagine the hair if Reggie and I could spawn and make Jimi babies.

well goodnight beautiful
the show was in one of those big outdoor amphitheaters, and they had guards posted at the various seating levels to make sure no one could get closer to the stage without the appropriate tickets. cave was playing pretty early in the day when a lot of the seats close to the stage were unoccupied. in between songs, he looked up towards the back at people watching from the hill behind the seating, and he asked, "why are you all sitting way up there? will they not let you up here because you do not have enough money? you all should really just come on up here". some people laughed, and they played the next song. after that, he said, "seriously, I want all you people to just come on up here. COME ON, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?", at which point 50-100 people started rushing towards the stage, jumping railings and running over seats. the stadium staff had no clue what was going on, and most of them managed to make it up front and mingle with the crowd in the pit so that they could not be yanked out. cave said, "now, isn't that better?" and proceeded with his set.
I am not too big a fan of the whole festival thing anymore. the last one I went to was all tomorrow's parties in LA back in 2002, maybe. also, I find that while the fests running these days go for overkill on the lineup, it is rarely the case that I find a band listed I have not yet heard of. seriously, if you are going to be running a show with 40 bands and 3 or 4 stages, you think you could invest some effort in finding some good new bands and try to introduce them to folks who have not heard of them. oh well...
I hope you had a good weekend.
