The night before last, UCC put on a benefit concert for Tsunami Relief. There were a bunch of bands and it was only seven bucks, and I decided to go. Besides, I haven't been to a concert in ... well, since Gwar in November. And I didn't have my camera then. Concert photography has always been a close favourite, next to portraiture... and I hadn't done any in so long so I got to bring my camera along this time and shoot some bands.
Finally got to see the Sound City Hooligans, who put on one of the most wicked sets I've seen in a long time. They were so tight, and their sound was polished like chrome. I can't wait to hear more from these guys. Rockabilly-punk-n-roll. Loved every minute of it.
Mid-Life Crisis, a bunch of older guys doing covers of some older songs. Not bad though, I must admit. They played some Tragically Hip, AC/DC, Van Halen, and more goodies. Fun to boogie to.
Seven Second Delay... punk band, NOFX + Strung Out. Fun to watch, also fun to boogie to. Witty banter between the guitarist and bassist, I can appreciate that. They played a great set, I'd see these guys again.
Paul Filek. A guy and his guitar. I have to confess that when I saw a guy and his guitar get onstage, I kind of just lost interest. But just as soon as I turned my back, my attention was peaked when he began an acoustic version of Stone Temple Pilots' 'Plush'. Now here is where I should say that I am extremely critical of people covering early 90s Seattle-grunge-era type music. Very few people can pull this off. But Paul did it wonderfully. He had me hanging on his every strum.
I'd been hearing a lot about the metal band on the bill, Konkrete. My boy had jammed with their lead guitarist/singer before, and had mentioned his ability in soloing and technical skills, especially for a guy into his later teenage years. I guess when they jammed he had a Warlock... but before their set, he pulled out a BC Rich Beast and it got me just a little excited. I love those guitars, my ex had one and they sound awesome. Not to mention the body... beautifully sculpted. I shot off the rest of my roll on this band, and oddly enough, most of them were of the lead guitarist with the Beast. Definitely a band thats a bit heavy with the solos and shredding, but at least it was something worth showing off. Amazing skills, rockstar to the T. A few tech difficulties during, but they were pretty good. I don't know how long they've been around, but these guys are going to be a band to watch out for in the near future.
I left after Konkrete played, as it was almost midnight and I was going to see a friend off to the bus station. I missed King Viper and Unit 731, both bands which I had never seen before. I'm sure I'll get another chance sometime soon. Need to attend more shows. Need media passes.
These are the first concert photos I've taken in probably over a year and a half, I'm a bit rusty, but please let me know what you think... constructive criticism is always welcome. xo
