My girlfriend Joanna and I went down to the Inner Harbor for New Year's Eve (holy fuck, it was cold!) As we were walking back to the car, and then driving back, we saw four different cop cars breaking something up at a bar or searching cars (one was searching a taxi). I just grinned and said, "Yep, not twenty minutes into 2009 and already the cops are working overtime; this is Baltimore."
We also drove by City Hall for the first time -- I got so used to seeing it in the Season 3 opening title sequence of The Wire, so seeing it in person was pretty cool. Then we drove through some of the less savory parts of town, some of which I know I've also seen on that show. For some reason I can't quite explain, I like seeing all that. I know Joanna isn't terribly happy here, and there's no doubt that neither one of us really fits in with the people we've met so far, but driving through this city and seeing the sights that I've only read about or seen on TV up close and in person, well... it feels real. Well, it is real. Seeing kids on the corners on my way to school, watching out for cops or potential buyers, seeing the vacants and burnt-out rowhouses, seeing the glazed look in druggies' eyes as they wander aimlessly down the street... it's so damn interesting to me. Maybe it's the writer in me, I don't know. But God help me, I get a sort of sick fascination out of it all.
Anyway, for the first time in many years, I'm actually feeling somewhat hopeful for this coming year. A lot of that has to do with Obama winning the election, but... I don't know, we'll just have to see. Welcome, 2009.

I know not to get too high about things, because not much has changed from a material point of view. At least my attitude is a welcome change. Not just for me, but for those who care about me as well.
