The German philospher Kant has a phrase, "Dich an Sich" which literally means the thing in itself which describes the consciously untenable nature of the non-subjective intrinsic properties of an object.
I won't get too muddled in jargon or technicalities, but for Kant, he sees the world as split into two realms, the Phenomena and the Noumena. The Phenomena is what we see, what we hear, what we experience of the object.
For ex: the redness and sweater-like nature of a red sweater.
The Noumena is what we can't take in, the intrinsic properties of the object, the essence.
No matter what the phenominal is, even if it spectacular, what is the purpose of the object without understanding the unconceivable thing in itself?
I don't know.
You don't care.
But it's been bothering me all fucking week.
