I suppose I could put in some more introductory material about what makes me tick, but I'm actually in the mood for some ranting. I'm a big know-it-all, though, so my ranting will probably sound like a lecture. Those who are sensitive to that kind of thing, to you I suggest moving on, I'll be writing other stuff after I have this out of my system. You have been warned.
Now, SG is a really good site. I really like the interface and all the ways they've set up so even the most clueless can find other people to talk to. The Hookup page is genius. I do have one tiny bit of criticism that others may have covered, but . . .
CANADA IS NOT SMALL!!!
Let me break it down . . .
The USA is a pretty big country, and has 50 states.
Canada is, by area, a little bigger than the US, and has only 10 provinces and 3 territoires now, most of which are larger than two average states.
Along the border, there's something like a dozen states and half as many provinces (again due to size). Most of the provinces have one or two major cities, and most interprovincial trips between cities take at least 6 hours to drive. To get from, say, Toronto to Vancouver, would be about a 3-day drive if you include sleep and other life support.
My point, if you haven't figured it out yet, is that I'm identified by the SG system as being in "Canada" which seems to treat Canada like a small state. If I click "Members Near Me" I'm more likely to get people in Montreal or Toronto, which in actuality are both further away from me in Calgary than, say, San Diego, Phoenix or Dallas. That "Search Within X miles" option becomes a farce.
Le sigh. It would be nice to know if the Powers That Be are doing anything about this, but I imagine they have bigger concerns at this point. Hopefully, if I am around long enough, I will gather a passel of Canucks around me who will help me change this system from within (or somehow get Canadian locale database thingamajigs from MapQuest or something).
Rant over.
That was actually pretty weak.
Every day I will grow a little bit.
