I want to start by saying this...The Joker is a masterpiece. An absolute masterpiece.
That being said, it is the darkest descent into madness I have ever witnessed on film. This film is not for the weak at heart. It tackles mental illness in one of the most realistic and vulnerable ways. It also contains some scenes that are hard to watch if you’re squeamish and some that are hard to watch even if you’re not.
Joaquin Phoenix will undoubtedly win the Oscar. But this Joker, this character, explores the origins of one of the most psychotic yet vulnerable villains in all of comic book lore. The Joker in the comics has shown us some truly sadistic, savage, comical, and tragic versions of himself. So keep that in mind when approaching this film.
There are those who will try to politicize this movie as they do with everything in the world right now so ignore all the outside noise and try to remember that. But also try to remember that there are those we come across every day, who we may not know and we may not give a second glance. There are however some people who go out of their way to be cruel because they enjoy seeing others suffer. Well, this film explores why that isn’t such a good idea. You never know who you may push over the edge, after all, some people are also waiting for that push. “That’s life...”
