Ok. Book versus movie?
I have this rule in my life: If I read the book I will refuse to see the movie--and vice versa.
I keep this rule because I hate being disappointed by the visual interpretations of books that I actually found interesting & stimulating. This goes for the "artsy" stuff as well. Really, if you liked the one you will either be disappointed with the other (as is usual if you read the book first) or it will ruin the one you liked (as is often the case if you liked the movie).
I have found 1 (only 1) exception to this rule (and I may, yet again, put myself in the geek category); Harry Potter (both the books and the movies are equally entertaining--so far--in my mind).
Trouble is... I've been having dilemmas due to the large number of comic book & graphic novel movies coming out lately. This is likely largely due to the lack of originality left on the continent, but I see the point. Both are very visual mediums. Up to now... not too difficult -- I enjoy DC movies, I do not read DC comics; therefore, no comparison. I have been pleasantly surprised, though, that so many movies are able to stay so true to their visual concepts... (ex. 300, V for Vendetta, Sin City, etc...)
My conclusions then:
I do not think good books should ever be made into any kind of movies (for the most part).
I really like unique/interesting/visually stimulating movies that maximize their medium.
... & I am worried that the movie/film medium is replacing the thrill of the shiny printed pages I read every month.
Hrmmmm...

However, I'm also a bibliophile and will always choose the written word and my imagination over someone else's interpretation of imagery no matter how resplendent.
