Sailor's Son.
I hope that you know by the salt on my skin
From the sea and my sweat that I'm at it again
I hope that the tides never bear me home,
But instead keep my shame ever-adrift.
I hope to Christ that my son will never know me
And that he never sets foot in the sea
Let his mother build a shameful kingdom to my heart
God knows she'd never stray too far from the truth.
My heart is tethered to my anger,
My anger is tethered to my soul.
One hand is tied tight to an anchor,
The other has a death-grip on an empty bottle once whole.
Like your eyes, the color of my words
Matches the blue horizon whose smile glistens
I've sung my sorrow out across the waves
But I don't think that anyone's left to listen.
Remember once that I smiled for you,
And tell our son it was for him, too.
