"Music is more than just notes on a page"
When I first stepped up to learn about music,I never knew what I was getting into. So then I started taking steps back. There is a certain snobbery to the classical world that is not going to affect me.
If you take any classical trained musician put a Methadones song in from of them, they won't be able to play it. Yeah maybe somebody will. Awhile ago I was thumbing through a guitar magazine and I came across a Ramones song. The first chord read was a G7. ummmm...no it is not a G7 chord it is a G chord played with the top three strings only. Now its great and all that you can transcribe and notate music on a page but you are not going to convince me that a Ramones song can be 'notated correctly'.
The Classical guitar has opened my world as a guitar player. Its great that are 4 classical pieces that I know that are in one position(sorry getting technical there). When I first started out I was telling myself(adding 50 tons of pressure)that I want to perform this stuff at the level of some students that started out earlier. But wait...I am not going for a performance degree.I am going toward a Recording degree.
So now I am telling myself, I am going to do the best job that I can. No matter where this takes me. I am going to practice what I am assigned or on my own. Who fucking cares if I am not as good as the guy that drives the BMW and has a big titted girlfriend. Thats not what I am about.
To turn this into a positive thing. Learning the classical style of guitar will help me write better punk songs, the piano will help me write better punks, sight singing/ear training will help me write better punk songs and make recording allot easier to understand.
I am at the point where I can listen to any Classical Super Hit and not care if I don't get it. Your not supposed to. If you do get it, great. Those you can't do, teach( I am talking about the teachers here). Don't get me wrong they are brilliant people and I respect them, but lets not argue because I don't think any of will come to a conclusion.
oh...if you can guess where that qoute came from you get...umm....5 points!!
