I’ve noticed recently a lot of photos that have such a shallow depth of field that only a very small part of the model is clearly in focus. I can only assume that this is because a lot of photographers are trying to use natural light and so they’re setting the aperture very wide to increase the brightness. Used sparingly and used well shallow depth of field is terrific for drawing attention to a specific feature but used all the time it just means that some of the photo isn’t as sharp as it should be. Some of my favourite photographers on SG are those who know when and how to use it. @leemalee is one good example, as are @caustix, @r_girardi and @writeboy.

Huh - that's why. I'm not a photog, so never would have put the depth of field together with lack of focus.
