Do you consider Friday the 13th a good luck or bad luck day? What was your luckiest or unluckiest day ever?
Thank you @rambo for this latest blog homework.
I've been very slack in writing blogs but a latest visit to a friend's well written online blog gave me some inspiration to express myself through text.
I'm indifferent to Friday the 13th at this point in life. Growing up as a full sceptical atheist in my youth I would have completely disregarded the thought that a day could bring or take away luck. These days I'm more open minded by possibilities. In fact these days I like to speculate, discuss and indulge in different theories and ideas. I try not to have set ideas or ideologies as time as taught me that these grow and shape with your consciousness and the collective society.
A few things I will stand by is the power of energies and frequencies and the immense possibilities of the mind. I find it extremely fascinating that we humans need to find meaning in everything. Meaning in days, meaning in planets, meaning in shapes, and meaning in numbers. The placebo effect is a powerful tool. So I believe ultimately that we create our luck with our choices and behaviour. The day is lucky to those who believe it to be lucky and vice-versa.
Personally this day had me a tad stumped. I couldn't fathom where I stand on this subject. I don't even really understand where this superstition originated . It's just something that has been ingrained into our society and thus our beliefs.
I'm not sure if most people know, but It is also believed by some that Friday the 13th is a lucky day for tattoo artists. Hence we will normally host a bunch of Friday the 13th flash days, with often $13 tattoos for 'Lucky 13' tattoos. I guess I fall into this category.
So it can't be all bad right?
So I did a bit of research. The origins of the superstitions are unclear, some attribute it to the middle ages from the story of Jesus and Judas being the 13th Apostle. Or Norse mythology, with Loki being said to be the thirteenth and also uninvited guest at a party. In the party he led to the death of Balder, the good. Tarot card 13 is the card named as death.
However on the flip side there are also a lot of others that believe it is a lucky and powerful number. There are 13 Moon cycles in a year. In ancient cultures, the number 13 represents femininity, fertility, the goddess because it corresponds to the number of lunar (menstrual) cycles in a year. In some numerology beliefs it is a karmic number and has great power.
Also different cultures have different beliefs and meaning to the number and day. In hispanic and greek culture it is Tuesday the 13th that is considered unlucky. In Italy it is Friday the 17th.
There is no record (as far as I can tell) of Friday the 13th, in conjunction with each other, being considered unlucky before the 19th Century and seems to be a westernised superstition. Perhaps it came into affect by a popular novel in 1907 'Friday, the Thirteenth' and became even more viral once the Friday the 13th movies came out.
I apologise for the lengthy historical lesson but I am quite excited and intrigued by history and I enjoyed looking into the origins.
I try not to live a life surrounded and dictated by fear and if I am irrationally scared of something I would force myself to do it to overcome that personal self-inflicted boundary. That is what pushed me into modelling, burlesque dancing, tattooing etc.
So I think I would stick by my stance of being indifferent to the day. It is just another day for us to make choices, to think thoughts, to live our lives for the better or worse and from these choices the ripple effect will determine our luck. There is luck or chance in everything so why create a day where you are mentally manifesting bad luck. Plus any excuse to dress up, to celebrate or to offer cheap tattoos is okay in my books.
I couldn't even begin to describe what my luckiest or unluckiest day has been. More so because I have lived an intense life. With highs and lows at every turn. There has been so many extreme days in my life that I can't even comprehend picking one and when I try to think of an example my brain turns to complicated mush.
On second thought the luckiest day of my life as cliche as it sounds, is the day I was born. Born alive (I was a breached c-section baby), born as a complete human (which no limbs missing or brain issues), born in Australia (my dad is Egyptian my mum is polish) as I definitely would not have had the opportunities I have been blessed with if I lived in Egypt or Poland. Born good-looking, as sadly I recognise my life was probably easier and smoother because I am attractive. Everything else is a bi-product of me being born. So no matter what happens I am lucky to be alive and surrounded by beautiful, amazing talented and supportive souls to experience life and beauty with me.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
The photos used in this blog is from an old photoshoot. 2014. In a dungeon... affectionately named the dungeon inside my head. I was inspired by emilie autumn for my look / costume (I made parts of if) and a bunch of mannequin heads that I purchased to shoot with and one day paint.
